"Ensure no one left behind"

SDG Young Advocate

Young people are active drivers of change in local communities. Young people and youth-led organizations need to have the space and recognition to participate in translation of the agenda into local, national and regional policy, in implementation, in monitoring and review, in holding governments accountable.

The adoption of the SDGs in 2015 could be described as an integration of human wisdom. In the context of the SDGs and Paris Agreement, nothing is more important than implementation. Corporations need to integrate solutions of social issues into their business activities, citizens need to move from awareness to action in their daily lives, and governments need to incorporate these topics into their national strategies.

Adopted by the United Nations (“UN") in 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The originality of this project is known as the First SDG-themed Junior Ambassador Programme in Hong Kong. This award-winning project was awarded The Best Global Goals Project, Local Global Goals Project and Most Outstanding Local Project (Top 3 Finalists) at the JCI Hong Kong National Convention 2017 and JCI World Congress 2017.

In 2017, the Programme was targeted to extend United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) education to primary school students. The SDGJA aims to foster a deeper connection between students and global policies, so as to drive a Behavioral Change from Inception to Implementation and disperse the positive actions to plant the seed in our future generations in creating a better and sustainable community. Therefore, Environmental Protection was chosen to be the core theme to introduce the importance of global sustainability to the youngsters, on 5 specific SDGs, namely “Clean Water and Sanitation” (SDG6), “Affordable and Clean Energy” (SDG7), “Climate Action” (SDG13), “Life below Water” (SDG14), “Life on Land” (SDG15), hoping to provide an opportunity for students to generate and to implement innovative and practical ideas to promote SDGs in their school and in the local community.

To ride on the success in 2017, align with our chapter's mission and vision. In 2018, the Programme puts strong emphasis on nurturing young females. We partner with Hong Kong Girl Guides Association to create the mission of “education for all” for young children (age 9-12) on societal issues aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and deliver trainings in Hong Kong and overseas. With the theme “Environment, Health and Well-being”, we are honoured to have received sponsorship from Hong Kong Airlines Limited to have a cultural exchange as well as collaborate with Girl Scouts of Japan to conduct an overseas SDG Junior Ambassador Programme Training in Tokyo, Japan.

Through participation in SDG trainings, not only will the Brownies be able to enhance leadership skills, this will also encourage promotion of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals at the community level and become a keen advocate to promote actions that respond to the goals.
